Hydrogen for vehicles soon reality

Soon, heavy vehicles will be able to refuel with hydrogen in Boden. The company Zelk Energy has been granted support from Klimatklivet to build up an infrastructure for hydrogen for vehicles in Norrbotten. They start in Boden and Piteå.

On December 7, the company Zelk Energy announced that they had been granted SEK 40 million in support from the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency in Klimatklivet. This enables the start of the company’s investment in hydrogen for heavy traffic in Norrbotten. The company itself contributes SEK 50 million.

In a first step, a plant for hydrogen production is planned in Piteå and a filling station in Boden. Here, heavy trucks, garbage trucks, buses and distribution vehicles must be able to refuel with clean hydrogen. Zelk Energy chooses to focus on hydrogen for heavier traffic precisely because they see that this would have the greatest impact on carbon dioxide emissions, in comparison with, for example, passenger cars.

The project includes collaborations with, among others, Pite Energi, Smurfit Kappa, Sveaskog and Skoog’s energy. In the long run, Zelk Energy hopes to be able to create a larger project in Boden and use Boden’s municipality’s surplus of biogas for hydrogen production.

In various stages, the company plans to expand its operations to eventually include the county’s 14 municipalities. The goal is to develop a strong infrastructure for hydrogen-powered heavy traffic throughout Norrbotten, as much of the heavy traffic is conducted on regional routes.
