The railway construction to Boden Industrial Park has reached a new milestone. Track installation is in full swing – a key step in strengthening Boden’s role in the green transition.
When Stegra selected Boden as the location for the world’s first large-scale green steel plant, it quickly became clear that the infrastructure needed to evolve at the same pace as the industry. To enable sustainable freight transport between Boden Industrial Park and the Iron Ore Line (Malmbanan), the Municipality of Boden took decisive action: to build a new railway – rapidly, in collaboration, and without burdening taxpayers.
The solution came in the form of a public-private partnership (PPP), with Polar Structure providing the investment and the municipality retaining strategic influence. The result is one of Sweden’s fastest and most cost-efficient railway projects, with the track now visibly taking shape.
“The fact that we’ve managed to stay on time and within budget in a project of this scale is truly remarkable. We’re now seeing the railway come to life, making the green transition tangible for residents and businesses alike,” says Mats Berg, Head of business relations in the municipality of Boden.
The railway is being built to accommodate trains up to 1,000 meters long – in line with the EU’s requirements for the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T). This not only enables more efficient logistics, but also opens new opportunities for the region’s industrial growth. Once completed in early 2026, the railway will strengthen northern Sweden’s role as a strategic hub for exports, logistics and sustainable development.
A high-paced construction with precision
PEAB, among others, is behind the construction, which is now in the middle of laying the track.
“It’s an intense and exciting project, full of energy. We’re building from untouched land to a finished railway in just 20 months, including planning and design. That demands a high level of coordination, flexibility and collaboration between all stakeholders,” says Andreas Öhgren, Project Manager at PEAB.

The steady pace and quality of the build is largely thanks to the close collaboration between the municipality, contractors and operators.
“There are many of us working hard, and it’s a rewarding experience for the entire team. Everyone feels they’re contributing to something that matters far beyond the everyday,” Andreas Öhgren adds.
Railway symbol of future infrastructure
Constructing new railway lines is rare in Sweden – but in Boden, it has become a concrete tool for meeting industrial needs and enabling long-term sustainability. The track will form the backbone of a modern logistics ecosystem emerging across the region.
“This is not just a milestone for the project – it’s clear proof that we’re delivering future-proof infrastructure in real time. We’ve also gained a strong and long-term partner in Polar Structure, which further strengthens our attractiveness as an industrial municipality,” says Mats Berg.
As the rails are now being laid, another crucial piece of the green transition is falling into place – with tracks leading straight into the future.
As part of the same infrastructure effort, PEAB is also building a new road to the area – yet another piece of the modern logistics puzzle forming in and around Boden Industrial Park.
