The bridge is now in place: a new structure connecting the residential areas of Södra Svartbyn with the recreational grounds of Gruvberget. Dedicated to pedestrians, cyclists and snowmobile riders, it plays a key role in preserving access to nature – even after the major industrial infrastructure expansion in the area.
During week 21, the final bridge sections were lifted into position. With that, the bridge – one of ten being built as part of the infrastructure project at Boden Industrial Park – has now taken shape in the landscape.
“Outdoor life is a natural part of everyday life for many residents in Boden. This bridge helps preserve access to our recreational areas, even after the construction of new roads and railways. It’s a concrete example of how we in Boden combine urban development with quality of life through our concept of “Närhetsliv,” says Magnus Åkerlund, Municipal Manager of Boden Municipality.
A year-round bridge
Spanning the new railway line, the bridge creates a natural link between housing and recreation. In winter, it opens for snowmobile traffic toward Gruvberget, a popular destination for outdoor activities and cross-country skiing. During the warmer seasons, joggers, families, cyclists and dog walkers use the same route – directly from the neighborhoods in Södra Svartbyn into the calm of the forest.
– “This is a milestone for the entire project. We have been looking forward to getting this in place for a long time,” says Max Havama, project manager at Polar Structure, which is responsible for building the infrastructure for Boden Industrial Park.
The new open-air bridge will have a multifunctional purpose – accommodating pedestrians, cyclists and snowmobile traffic.
Part of a greater whole
The bridge is expected to open in the fall and is one of ten being built in the area. Some allow safe crossings between road and rail, while others – like this one – are designed to allow people to move easily between city and countryside.
“All bridges have now been cast. What remains are final adjustments before we can complete the road and railway connections,” says Max Havama.
The new infrastructure corridor, which will link the Boden Industrial Park with the Malmbanan railway line, is being completed in stages. The railway is expected to be operational by the end of 2025.
