The Land and Environment Court has approved H2 Green Steel’sapplication for an environmental permit for a green steel production facility at Boden Industrial Park.
Today, the Land and Environment Court in Umeå announced that H2 Green Steel is granted a full environmental permit for its plant in Boden. The ruling allowing the company to build the steel plant came on July 1, 2022. Now the company has also received permission to start operating the steel plant.
The permit covers an operation to produce up to 5 million tons of green steel. Not only is the operation large, covering about 270 hectares, it is also complex and is classified under the Environmental Code as an ‘A’ activity.
Among other things, the court has imposed conditions on air emissions, dust and noise. The press release also states that the company must provide or maintain an industrial rescue service to deal with accidents and incidents.
New phase
Today’s approval of the environmental permit means that the company’s investment in a fully integrated, digitalized and sustainable green steel and hydrogen production facility enters a new phase. The aim is still to start production in the second half of 2025. The company is continuously engaging partners in the project. For example, an agreement with the Port of Luleå was recently announced.
The final cost of the establishment at Boden Industrial Park is estimated at around SEK 50 billion. For the municipality of Boden, H2 Green Steel’s investment is the major accelerator for the ongoing societal transition.
– Another green light for H2 Green Steel’s mega investment, which of course feels extremely gratifying. This will not only benefit the company, but also Boden, the whole region and Sweden. What is now happening at Boden Industrial Park with H2 Green Steel symbolizes in many ways the new industrialization here in Northern Sweden – this is where it happens. A somewhat historic day for the green steel city of Boden”, says Claes Nordmark, municipal councillor.
– This is a great day where we from Boden, together with all the other instances involved, show the whole of Sweden that it is actually possible to have fast processes in complex permit issues. This is an important milestone for our company that enables us to continue the work at a high pace,” says Henrik Henriksson, CEO of H2 Green Steel.
– An extremely strong and positive signal where H2 Green Steel passes another milestone in its efforts. The feeling has always been that “Sverige AB” wants this to happen and now it is happening. The effects and pressure linked to the major processes that are now underway will gradually increase and create lots of opportunities but also challenges. We will really have to be on our toes to ensure that this is as good as possible in the ongoing societal transition,” says Mats Berg, head of the business community.
