Boden Municipality and H2 Green Steel have agreed on a deal that means the company will purchase the land where the steel mill and hydrogen facility will be built.
The Municipal Council approved the sale of two municipal companies, Boden Steelworks Property AB and Boden Hydrogen Property AB. These companies were formed to exploit and develop land for steel mills and hydrogen within Boden Municipality and own the land where H2 Green Steel is setting up its operations.
In practice, this means that the municipality is selling part of the land at Boden Industrial Park to H2 Green Steel, enabling their investment in a hydrogen-powered steel plant for the production of green steel.
– This is undoubtedly a milestone in Boden’s development as a new, green, and forward-looking industrial city and a collaborative partner within the steel and hydrogen industry,” says Claes Nordmark, municipal commissioner in Boden.
– The land agreement is another important step towards the establishment of the world’s first large-scale facility for green steel and what will become Europe’s largest hydrogen facility in Boden,” says Henrik Henriksson, CEO of H2 Green Steel, and continues:
– We are in a hurry to contribute to the transformation of steel, which is one of the dirtiest industries that has long polluted our planet. That’s why it’s crucial to work together to find good solutions and at a high pace in the way we do with many parties in Boden, not least the municipality.
In total, H2GS is purchasing 269 hectares, and the sum of the sale amounts to 134 million kronor, which corresponds to the valued price of 50 kronor per square meter.
The agreement also contains clauses that allow both parties to cancel the purchase/sale if conditions are not met. One of these concerns the financing of railways and technical water to Boden Industrial Park.
– The entire transition is in many ways a complicated process where the pressure is now increasing. But we have set up a smart organization where competent colleagues now address the challenges we see coming, says Mats Berg, head of business development.
Boden Industrial Park is Sweden’s largest planned industrial area and is one of our three major green industrial areas where we are shaping the circular Boden of the future. There is abundant access to renewable electricity, and the area is close to existing infrastructure, creating unique conditions for establishing space-demanding operations that contribute to the green transition within the industry.
The area is 550 hectares in size, equivalent to over 1,000 standard-sized football fields and is larger than Kungsholmen in Stockholm’s inner city (391 hectares).
– Boden Industrial Park, with H2 Green Steel’s billion-dollar investment, symbolizes the re-industrialization here in northern Sweden. But it’s also important to remember that half of the area is still undeveloped, and there’s a lot of attractive land left that will also contribute to our green societal transformation, says Claes Nordmark.
