Boden is growing rapidly. With the increasing number of people staying here, there are high demands for effective coordination. Weekly meetings are held between Boden municipality, Stegra and the police to ensure that everything runs as smoothly as possible.
Currently, Stegra has two areas of temporary contractor housing in operation under its own management, with a third under construction. The number of workers helping to build Stegra’s new green steelworks is steadily increasing. In the fall of 2024, more than 700 workers will be living in Stegra’s own housing on Nylandsbäcken and Slipvägen. The number is expected to increase gradually during the winter and spring.
Cooperation between the municipality, Stegra and the police has been established ever since the temporary housing was first planned.
Close cooperation
“The role of the municipality now that everything is up and running is to continue to cooperate with all the parties involved”, says Gabriella Snell, construction project manager at the project and investment unit of the municipality of Boden.
Every week there is rapid coordination between the municipality’s project management for contractor housing, traffic, project coordination Living & Living, security work, Stegra’s responsible for contractor housing and the police. Everyone supplies information about the situation and efforts are coordinated quickly and efficiently when needed.
“It can be anything from order and tidiness to waste management, traffic situation, information and communication”, Gabriella explains.
Safety and security
Stegra has organized its housing with, among other things, guard rounds and a manned reception with personal check-in and check-out. Through agreements with the municipality, there are clear rules for living in their areas.
“We want those who come to stay temporarily in our accommodation, partly to relieve the housing market in general, but this is also where we can keep an eye on things. From Stegra’s side, we take it very seriously that the residents follow the rules and reserve the right to reject residents if they misbehave”, says Herman Klug, temporary housing manager at Stegra.
Helping each other
Sarah Ekbom, a municipal police officer, points out the advantage of this type of accommodation over private villas and apartments bought or rented by companies where no one knows who is moving around or what is happening. The municipality, the police and Stegra all add that it is important for residents to get in touch if something needs to be done.
The aim is for it to work as well as possible, both for people living here temporarily and for residents, and for the increased number of residents in Boden to have an effect on Boden’s trade, services, restaurants, tourism and more.
The temporary housing is only intended for staff working in Boden temporarily during the construction of Stegra’s operations at Boden Industrial Park. People who stay longer are referred to permanent housing and will hopefully become new citizens who settle here.
According to a political decision, the municipality of Boden is already responsible in 2021 for providing land and temporary building permits for the temporary housing. Stegra is responsible for the construction, maintenance and restoration of the areas.
