A new zoning plan is now being drawn up in the municipality of Boden to investigate the possibilities for accommodation close to horses and horse activities in the Lejonbacken area.
“Boden has unique opportunities when it comes to the horse industry. There are already well-established activities such as the racetrack, horse power and the existing riding school, which is being expanded. By building on these activities and investing in accommodation close to horses, conditions are created for migration and increased growth in the municipality of Boden”, says Lars Andersson, Head of Planning and Development, Boden Municipality.
The purpose of the detailed plan is to investigate the suitability for the development of equestrian accommodation and activities. In the vicinity there is, among other things, Boden’s riding club. There is also a significant network of bridleways. In further planning work, important routes, bridle paths and their interconnection must be ensured, or new routes and destinations must be investigated.
In the municipality’s general plan, the area in question at and around Lejonbacksvägen and Lorvenvägen is designated as a business area for the development of horse activities. Examples include existing equestrian facilities, training and recreational areas and the possibility of residential development with equestrian facilities.
In the municipality’s in-depth comprehensive plan for the center of Boden and Sävast, parts of the area are currently located within existing horse operations and other parts within an outdoor area.
The Physical Planning Unit will start the planning process in 2024. It is hoped that there will be a detailed plan with legal force by the end of 2024/2025.
A long tradition
Boden has a long tradition of horses, going all the way back to the Armed Forces horses used when the city was built over 100 years ago. Boden has in recent years been named as one of Sweden’s most horse-dense areas, both in absolute terms and per capita.
There are many people connected to the horse industry, both professionally and as a hobby.
Boden is also home to Bodentravet, a riding school, western riding, trotting school, horse breeding, pony riding, dressage and more. Recently, Boden’s riding club with around 600 members received the national Equestrian Sport Safety Award 2023 for its work. In Boden, a brand new equestrian facility is also being built close to the area now being studied in the detailed plan:
