The municipal adult education programs in southern Norrbotten are now scaling up to meet the skills needs of new establishments as well as existing industries. First out at Lärcentrum in Boden is an upper secondary education to industrial electrician starting this fall.
The new wave of industrialization in Norrbotten is in great need of new employees. The biggest demand is for staff with vocational training at secondary level. Municipal adult education institutions are therefore launching a range of new vocational training courses for adults to match supply with demand. The level of education is upper secondary, but takes place within the framework of Komvux together with the other municipalities of Boden, Luleå, Piteå, Älvsbyn and Kalix.
Adult education courses combine theoretical and practical studies with on-the-job learning in a company in the sector. The lessons are conducted in Luleå. The traineeship can be carried out in a company in your home town.
The first industrial electrician course starts in September and is now open for applications. Admission is on a rolling basis and the course is 65 weeks long for full-time study.
Industrial electricians install and assemble electrical equipment and check, maintain and repair electrical and automation equipment. They work with both high and low voltage and can either be employed by an industrial company or an installation company and carry out assignments in different industries.
High demand for industrial electricians
Anyone who is interested in a service-oriented profession with programmable systems, as well as craftsmanship, and enjoys working with problem solving, has a very good job market as an industrial electrician throughout the county. There is a general shortage of electricians in the county and specialist skills for industry are in high demand, not least at H2 Green Steel.
Philip Alsén, recruitment manager at H2 Green Steel, which is setting up in Boden, says:
“From 2024 and for several years to come, we will have a great need to recruit industrial electricians for our facility in Boden. In addition to working at what will be the world’s most modern steel plant, this is also an opportunity for those who want to work on one of Sweden’s largest industrial projects of all time, making a major contribution to the green transition.”
More training courses
More vocational training courses targeting the future needs of the county in general and Boden in particular, are being planned. H2 Green Steel’sfacility at Boden Industrial Park is estimated to have around 2000 employees in various professional categories by 2030.
“It is gratifying that we are getting started with training that meets all the needs we see. It is also imperative that all education providers try to find opportunities to contribute to the positive development that is now taking place in Norrbotten, both in the short term, where adult education and external actors are the most important players, as well as upper secondary schools that can contribute in the longer term”, says Bert-Olov Ström, acting head of schools in the municipality of Boden.
